BECE (JUNIOR WAEC)

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), popularly known in many parts of Nigeria as Junior WAEC or JSCE (Junior Secondary Certificate Examination), is one of the most important examinations written by students at the end of their junior secondary school education. The examination is designed to assess students after completing the three-year Junior Secondary School (JSS) programme and serves as a major requirement for progression into Senior Secondary School (SSS). The BECE was introduced in Nigeria as part of the country’s educational reforms under the 6-3-3-4 system of education, which was officially adopted in 1982. The system was designed to improve secondary education by separating junior secondary education from senior secondary education and creating a structured examination process for students completing the junior secondary level. The examination later became an important component of Nigeria’s 9-Year Basic Education Programme, which combines six years of primary education with three years of junior secondary education. The BECE helps determine students’ readiness for senior secondary education and their placement into science, arts, or commercial classes. The examination is conducted under the supervision of various State Ministries of Education, examination boards, and approved education authorities across Nigeria. In some states and schools, the examination may also be referred to as:
  • Junior WAEC
  • JSCE
  • Junior Secondary School Examination
  • Basic Education Examination
The BECE plays an important role in evaluating students’ academic performance, intellectual development, and readiness for higher levels of education. Results obtained in the examination are often used for:
  • Promotion into Senior Secondary School
  • Placement into Arts, Science, or Commercial classes
  • Admission into unity schools and special colleges
  • Academic assessment and student evaluation
BECE covers a wide range of subjects taught at the junior secondary school level. Common subjects include:
  • English Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Basic Science
  • Basic Technology
  • Social Studies
  • Civic Education
  • Cultural and Creative Arts
  • Agricultural Science
  • Computer Studies
  • Business Studies
  • Christian Religious Studies (CRS)
  • Islamic Religious Studies (IRS)
  • Home Economics
  • Physical and Health Education
  • French
  • National Values
  • Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa Languages
  • Security Education
  • and other junior secondary school subjects depending on the state curriculum.
The examination is usually conducted using:
  • Objective Questions (Multiple Choice)
  • Theory Questions
  • Practical Questions for selected subjects
In recent years, some schools and examination centres have also introduced Computer-Based Testing (CBT) practice systems to help students become familiar with modern examination methods and improve digital literacy skills. The BECE examination format generally tests students on topics covered throughout their junior secondary school education. Questions are designed to evaluate:
  • Knowledge and understanding
  • Communication skills
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Numerical reasoning
  • Practical application of concepts
The examination timetable usually spans several days, with students writing different subjects according to the approved timetable released by the relevant examination authorities. Preparing with BECE past questions and answers is one of the most effective ways for students to understand the examination structure, repeated topics, and common question patterns. Past questions help students become more confident and familiar with the examination environment before the actual examination. Students are also encouraged to participate in regular BECE mock examinations and CBT practice tests to improve speed, accuracy, time management, and overall examination readiness. Studying with the official BECE syllabus is highly recommended, as it helps students focus on important topics likely to appear during the examination. Teachers, parents, and schools also play important roles in helping students prepare adequately through revision classes, assignments, and continuous assessment. Success in the BECE examination requires proper preparation, regular practice, effective study habits, and a good understanding of all junior secondary school subjects. Students are advised to study consistently, revise past questions regularly, and remain focused throughout their preparation period. The BECE remains an important stage in Nigeria’s educational system, helping students build a strong academic foundation before advancing into senior secondary education and future external examinations such as WAEC, NECO, and JAMB.
