Jupeb

The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) is a national examinations body approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria to conduct common and standard examinations for candidates who have completed approved foundation programmes and are seeking Direct Entry admission into 200 Level in Nigerian and partnering foreign universities. The JUPEB programme normally runs for one academic session, after which candidates sit for the JUPEB examination. Successful candidates can use their JUPEB results to process Direct Entry admission through JAMB into universities that accept JUPEB results. JUPEB examinations currently cover 19 subjects grouped into Arts & Humanities, Management & Social Sciences, and Sciences. Candidates normally register for three subjects based on their intended university course and approved JUPEB subject combination. JUPEB Arts & Humanities subjects include:

• French
• History
• Igbo
• Islamic Religious Studies
• Literature-in-English
• Music
• Visual Arts
• Yoruba

JUPEB Management & Social Sciences subjects include:

• Accounting
• Business Studies
• Economics
• Geography
• Government

JUPEB Science subjects include:

• Agricultural Science
• Biology
• Chemistry
• Mathematics
• Physics

JUPEB provides approved subject combinations for different university courses and departments. Examples include Biology, Chemistry and Physics for some science-related programmes; Economics, Government and Mathematics for some commercial and social science programmes; and combinations involving Literature-in-English, Government, History, CRS, IRS, French, Music, Visual Arts and Nigerian languages for relevant arts programmes. Candidates should select combinations that correspond with their intended course of study and the requirements of the university they wish to attend. JUPEB examination papers may include:

• Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
• Essay Questions
• Practical Examinations
• Oral Examinations

The examination format depends on the subject. JUPEB's official examination materials show that subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Agricultural Science and Visual Arts may have practical components, while subjects also have their relevant MCQ and essay papers. French may additionally involve an oral component. JUPEB candidates are expected to prepare using:

JUPEB provides syllabuses for its examination subjects, and candidates can access the syllabus through the university or approved centre where they registered. JUPEB also makes past examination questions available for candidates to use for practice. JUPEB examinations are normally written in June each year, according to the Board's official FAQ. The examination is conducted at JUPEB-approved university centres nationwide. JUPEB grading system awards points according to the grade obtained in each of the three subjects:

• A = 5 points
• B = 4 points
• C = 3 points
• D = 2 points
• E = 1 point
• F = 0 point

JUPEB also adds one additional point when a candidate obtains a passing grade in all three subjects. For example, grades B, D and C give 4 + 2 + 3 points, plus the additional point, resulting in 10 points. To perform well in the JUPEB examination, candidates should:

• Study the official JUPEB syllabus carefully
• Attend lectures regularly
• Revise all three registered subjects consistently
• Practise JUPEB past questions
• Practise under examination time limits
• Pay attention to both objective and essay questions
• Prepare adequately for practical or oral papers where applicable
• Identify weak topics and revise them repeatedly
