At 69, Mrs. Kate Bosede Akomolafe has proven that learning never stops. The retired data officer and pig farmer has officially matriculated into the University of Ibadan’s Distance Learning Centre for the 2024/2025 session - inspiring thousands with her commitment to education and self-growth.
A 69-year-old woman, Mrs. Kate Bosede Akomolafe, captured attention and admiration during the matriculation ceremony of the University of Ibadan’s Distance Learning Centre (DLC) on Friday, where she officially became one of more than 5,000 students admitted for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The oath of admission was administered by the university’s Registrar, Mr. Ganiyu O. Saliu, at the event, which welcomed new learners into sixteen different academic programmes under the DLC.
Mrs. Akomolafe widespread ceremony images praise for her inspiring decision to return to school at her age. According to a post on the university’s official Facebook page, she is a retired Data Processing Officer who previously worked with R.T. Briscoe Motor Company.

Wearing her matriculation gown and cap, Mrs. Akomolafe beamed with joy as she joined her younger colleagues to take the oath. Now a pig farmer and former flour distributor, she has chosen to study Social Work, explaining that the knowledge would help her effectively manage her non-governmental organisation.
Born on December 22, 1956, Mrs. Akomolafe completed her West African School Certificate in 1976 at Government Secondary School, Creek Road, Port Harcourt. Nearly fifty years later, in 2023, she courageously sat again for both WASSCE and NECO examinations to secure the required credits for her long-cherished dream of earning a university degree.
Delivering a speech titled “Genuine Success is Achieved Through Deliberate Choices,” Professor Olapegba advised the students to stay focused, maintain meaningful relationships, and make responsible decisions, as each experience at the university contributes to shaping their future.
