The University of Lagos has held its 56th convocation ceremony, graduating a total of 16,506 students across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, with 1,211 earning First Class honours and distinctions, including the Overall Best Graduating Student
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has successfully conducted its 56th convocation ceremony, awarding degrees, diplomas, and certificates to a total of 16,506 graduating students across undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and professional programmes.
According to figures released by the university at a pre-convocation press briefing, 10,584 students received first degrees and diplomas, while 5,922 postgraduate students were awarded advanced degrees ranging from postgraduate diplomas to doctoral qualifications. An additional 140 graduates finished programmes at the UNILAG Business School (ULBS).
A notable academic achievement this year was the number of high-achievers: 1,211 graduands earned First Class honours or distinctions. This aggregate figure comprises 617 first-class undergraduate degrees, 92 undergraduate distinctions, and 502 postgraduate distinctions, underscoring UNILAG’s strong academic culture.

Detailed breakdowns of degree classifications among undergraduate students reveal that 4,543 obtained Second-Class Upper honours, 3,910 earned Second-Class Lower honours, 1,023 graduated with Third Class degrees, 69 with Pass, and 330 graduates had unclassified degrees, particularly in fields such as Pharmacy, Dental Sciences, Health Professions, and Clinical Sciences.
At the postgraduate level, 479 students graduated with Postgraduate Diploma certificates, including 41 distinctions. In the Master’s category, 5,148 candidates graduated, with 429 distinctions, and 119 scholars were awarded Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in various disciplines. At the Business School, 32 earned distinctions among the 140 graduates.
The ceremony also spotlighted individual excellence: Chukwuzubelu Benedict Umeozor, of the Department of Business Administration, graduated with a perfect 5.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and was recognised as the Overall Best Graduating Student for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The 56th convocation reflects both the depth and breadth of academic achievement at UNILAG and reinforces its reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading centres of higher learning.
