The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has made it possible for undergraduate students across the country to access tuition and upkeep loans easily through its online portal. However, some students may later decide they no longer need the loan - perhaps because their parents or sponsors can now cover their fees, or due to personal reasons.

If you’ve already applied for a NELFUND student loan but wish to cancel your application, here’s everything you need to know - including how to write a proper cancellation letter and submit it correctly.

Understanding the NELFUND Loan Cancellation Process

A student loan cancellation letter is a formal request sent by an applicant to NELFUND, asking that their loan application be withdrawn before approval or disbursement.

At the time of publication, the NELFUND portal does not yet provide a direct “Cancel Application” button, but applicants can request a discontinuation of their loan processing through the official support channel.

Importantly, you cannot cancel your application once the loan has been approved or disbursed - only pending or verified applications can be stopped.

How to Write a Student Loan Cancellation Letter

If you’ve decided not to continue with your NELFUND loan, the first step is to write a simple, polite cancellation letter that includes all the necessary details from your original application.

Sample:

Dear NELFUND Support Team,

I am writing to formally request the cancellation of my student loan application for both tuition and upkeep loans, which I submitted on August 12, 2024.

My application is currently at the “verified” stage, but I wish to discontinue the process.

Below are my details:

Full Name: [Your full name]
Matriculation Number: [Your matric no.]
Institution: [Your university name]
Department: [Your department]
Faculty: [Your faculty]
Session: [Your academic session]
Email: [Your email]
Phone Number: [Your phone number]
Kindly remove my details from the loan processing database.

Thank you for your understanding and assistance.

Sincerely,
[Your Full Name]

This letter serves as an official record that you’ve chosen to opt out of the NELFUND student loan scheme.

How to Submit the Loan Cancellation Request via NELFUND Portal

Follow these steps carefully to submit your cancellation request:

1. Visit the official NELFUND website
2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “Contact Us.”
3. You will be redirected to nelfund.esupport.ng
4. On the support page, click “Raise Ticket.”
5. Fill in your details exactly as they appeared on your original application.
6. Under:
- Category: Loan Application
- Subcategory: Other Loan Application Issue
7. Attach your loan cancellation letter.
8. Submit your ticket.
You can track your request by navigating to the “My Tickets” section of your NELFUND support dashboard. Once reviewed, NELFUND support will respond with the status of your cancellation request.

Alternative Option

Submit via Email: In addition to raising a ticket on the NELFUND support portal, applicants can also send their loan cancellation request via email. Simply forward your cancellation letter and application details to clientsupport@nelf.gov.ng or info@nelf.gov.ng, using the subject line “Request for Student Loan Cancellation.” This ensures your request is properly logged and reviewed through multiple official channels.

Important Things to Note

- You can only cancel before disbursement.
- Applications that are pending or verified can still be withdrawn, but once your loan is approved or paid, cancellation is no longer possible.
- If your institution hasn’t yet verified your application, you can also inform them not to proceed with verification.
- Keep all records - including emails, ticket numbers, and screenshots - for future reference.

While NELFUND continues to improve its self-service features, loan cancellation remains a manual process that requires a formal request. If you no longer wish to proceed with your student loan, submitting a properly written cancellation letter through the official eSupport channel ensures your application is discontinued safely and officially.

As the Fund continues to expand, it’s expected that future updates will include a direct “Cancel Application” feature to simplify the process for students.
