The Abia State Government has approved a significant increase in the monthly allowance for NYSC corps members serving in the state. Under the revised structure, all corps members will receive a ₦20,000 base stipend from the state, with those in state establishments earning an additional ₦10,000 and those in teaching or medical roles receiving ₦30,000 extra.

Governor Alex Otti has approved a significant upward review of the monthly stipends paid to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in Abia State.
The new allowance structure replaces the previous ₦4,000 payment with a more robust package designed to improve welfare and attract skilled graduates to key sectors.

Under the revised arrangement, every corps member posted to Abia will now receive a state-paid base allowance of ₦20,000. Those deployed to state government ministries and agencies will get an additional ₦10,000, while corps members serving as teachers or medical personnel will receive a higher supplementary allowance of ₦30,000 due to their importance in education and healthcare service delivery.

This new structure is separate from the federal monthly allowance of ₦77,000, meaning corps members serving in Abia could now earn as much as ₦50,000 from the state alone, depending on their role and place of primary assignment. This positions Abia among the leading states in terms of corps member welfare support.

The state government explained that the increment is part of a broader effort to strengthen human capital development, expand the workforce in critical sectors, and encourage young professionals to contribute meaningfully to governance and community service. The administration also highlighted recent improvement works at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende, including facility upgrades and infrastructure enhancements.

According to the governor, investments in corps members are investments in the state’s future, and both federal and state facilities within Abia deserve attention because they benefit the people directly. The government added that the new policy represents the first major review of corps member allowances in nearly three decades and reflects its commitment to youth development and institutional capacity building.
