JAMB has officially approved The Lekki Headmaster as the recommended novel for Use of English. Learn the themes, plot focus, and preparation tips for exam success.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially updated the recommended novel for the Use of English examination.

The previous text, The Life Changer, is no longer in use. For the 2026 UTME, candidates are now expected to study The Lekki Headmaster by Kabir Alabi Garba as the approved novel.

This change aims to give students a more realistic view of the Nigerian educational system, focusing on school leadership, integrity, and discipline. The novel is now tested under the Literature-in-English section of the exam, making it essential for every candidate’s preparation.

The Lekki Headmaster tells the story of Mr. Bepo Adewale, a disciplined and principled school administrator assigned to manage a troubled school in Lekki. The novel explores challenges such as poor student behaviour, staff irresponsibility, corruption within the school system, and the struggle to maintain high standards.

Through the headmaster’s leadership and decision-making, readers learn the importance of integrity, accountability, and effective management in educational settings.

Studying this novel thoroughly gives candidates a significant advantage in the exam. By reading carefully, summarising chapters, and practising related questions, students can gain confidence and a deeper understanding of the story, making it easier to answer both direct and interpretive questions.

Candidates are encouraged to stay updated with official JAMB materials and trusted school sources. Focusing on The Lekki Headmaster will help students prepare effectively and approach the 2026 UTME with confidence.
